2021 MTSBA’s HR Virtual Symposium Agenda

Sponsored by MTSUIP - No fee to attend!

Tuesdays, February 9, 16, and 23, 2021

Or watch the video recordings of each session! Video links will be posted a few days after each session.

Intended Outcomes: Given that collective bargaining issues and the employment relationship are areas of high-risk for any District, this training is critical for trustees and administrators. Those who take advantage of this value-added training sponsored by MTSBA’s Unemployment Insurance Program (MTSUIP) will come away with enhanced knowledge of pending collective bargaining issues, lawful and effective hiring practices, the significance of employment contracts, effective tools for improving employee performance, the importance of compliance with progressive discipline and due process requirements for termination of employment.

Tuesday, Feb. 9 (1-3 pm)   During this session, the MTSBA legal and labor staff will focus on collective bargaining and pending matters that are impacting collective bargaining and district operations, including but not limited to MOA’s and legislation that could impact collective bargaining in Montana.

Tuesday, Feb. 16 (1-3 pm) The focus of this session will be on the hiring process, the application of the Wrongful Discharge Act to schools, and the necessity of employment contract language that provides protections for the district. We will also discuss current challenges in HR matters relating to COVID-19.

Tuesday, Feb. 23 (1-3 pm)  This session will focus on the employment relationship from start to finish, including establishing expectations through job descriptions, effective evaluation procedures, discipline pitfalls, and termination of employment. We will also include guidance on the non-renewal of non-tenured teachers.

MTSBA Cancellation Policy: There are no refunds for cancellations (5) days prior to the date of the training. Notification of cancellations must be received by Wendy Brenden by email at wbrenden@mtsba.org. However, if MTSBA cancels an in-person event due to extenuating or unforeseen circumstances those registered will be moved to the video-option for that event.  If you are registered and do not want the video-option, you must notify MTSBA within 5 days after the cancellation notice to prevent being charged for that event.
