2021 MTSBA/MASBO School Finance

and Budget Virtual Symposium Agenda

Sponsored by MTSUIP

Tuesdays, March 9, 16 and 23, 2021

Participant/Learner Outcomes: This training is being jointly hosted by MASBO and MTSBA as it is essential that your District’s leadership team (trustees, business managers and administrators alike) has a firm understanding of: (1) Montana’s school finance laws; (2) your District’s budgeting process, and (3) strategies to promote personalized learning and efficient District operations. Those who take advantage of this value-added training sponsored by MTSBA’s Unemployment Insurance Program (MTSUIP) will come away with enhanced knowledge in these key areas of operations and governance.

Tuesday, March 9 (1-3 pm) During this session, we will provide an overview of the history of school finance in Montana and the advancements in funding Montana’s public schools over several legislative sessions. We will provide an overview of MTSBA’s and MASBO’s 2021 Legislative Priorities and the status of those priorities.

Tuesday, March 16 (1-3 pm) The focus of this session will be on the budgeting process, including an overview of the budgeted and non-budgeted funds, the use of the funds and restrictions on the same. This session will also include a discussion between budget authority and cash as well as information on allowable reserves, use of the General Fund and appropriate uses of federal COVID funds.

Tuesday, March 23 (1-3 pm) This session will focus on the flexibilities and efficiencies to maximize district resources and enhance personalized learning. We will focus on the policies and procedures to implement these changes in district operations.

MTSBA Cancellation Policy: There are no refunds for cancellations (5) days prior to the date of the training. Notification of cancellations must be received by Wendy Brenden by email at wbrenden@mtsba.org.
