New Trustee Orientation Series

Tuesdays, May 17, 23, 31, 2022 - 1:00-3:00 pm

If you can't join us on the dates listed, we're recording and will have video links available!

May 17 – Overview of MTSBA Services and Membership Values – During this session, we will provide newly-elected trustees and other school leaders with an overview of all of the programs and services offered by MTSBA and the value of membership in MTSBA. This will include a discussion of meaningful professional development opportunities throughout the year at no charge to trustees or your District. We will also explain our dues-based and fee-based services so you can start your service knowing that MTSBA is here to assist you in your service as a trustee.

May 24 – Essentials for School Board Trustees – During this session, we will focus on the authority, duties and responsibilities of boards of trustees. This will include discussions on the limitations of authority of individual trustees, the legal duties of care, loyalty and obedience, ethical responsibilities, and other strategies for effective school board governance. During this session, we will also include an overview of Montana’s open meeting laws and what is required of boards of trustees.

May 30 – Managing Your Risk – School boards are often faced with legal issues that take you away from your focus on maximizing the potential of each child. During this session, we will provide an overview of some of the more common legal issues school boards face in Montana, including but not limited to parent and student rights and responsibilities, employment-related matters and other areas of risk for school districts. Recognizing those risks and effectively managing your risk will allow you to keep your focus on the interests of students.
