(Districts registering for the unlimited option - register district clerk, superintendent or board chair and links will be sent to you to push to those in your district who will be attending or watching the recording).

Educational and Activities leaders in Montana’s schools should join MTSBA and MHSA staff in an in-depth look at the emerging issues related to school athletics and activities. Staff that should attend include activities directors, coaches, advisors, trustees, and administrators.


AUGUST 6, 2024

  • Coach Contracts, Performance Evaluations, and Board Meetings - The focus of this session will be on the best practices for making coaching and other extra-duty decisions in compliance with the Montana Open Meeting and Public Comment laws and reviewing the status of the coaches under the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Montana Wrongful Discharge Act.
  • Student Clubs and Use of School Buildings – The focus of this session will be on the best practices for complying the federal statutes and case law regarding curricular student clubs and noncurricular groups while ensuring equal access to school facilities and honoring parent rights.
  • Responsible Activities Financial Operations – The focus of this session will be on how districts can responsibly raise funds while complying with equity laws and school finance regulations.

AUGUST 13, 2024

  • First Amendment Speech Rights and Responsibilities for Coaches and Students - The focus of this session will be how districts can responsibly establish and enforce expectations for students and coaches regarding expressions of faith and statements on social media in a manner consistent with applicable case law.
  • Activities Cooperatives – The focus of this session will be how to establish a cooperative that has the necessary governance structure, hiring practices, financial procedures, policies, handbooks, and insurance coverage to ensure a lasting and collaborative multi-district activity program.  
  • Activities Transportation, Lodging, Facility Rentals, and Offseason Events – The focus of this session will be how districts can safely provide activities transportation when faced with driver shortages, lodging for students on trips, renting district-owned property, and ensuring offseason activity events are handled consistent with applicable laws, rules, and policies.
  • Sex Equity in Activities – The focus of this session will be on how districts can comply with laws requiring equitable access to activity opportunities among all students. 

AUGUST 20, 2024

  • MHSA Rules Update – This session will be a review of the latest developments in Montana High School Association procedures provided by MHSA leaders.Roles and Responsibilities of Activities Directors – The focus of this session will be how activities directors can complete their duties in a manner consistent with district expectations, state law, and employment contract.
  • Nonresident Students and Unenrolled Children Participation in Public School Activities – The focus of this session will be how districts can comply laws and policies regarding nonresident students and unenrolled children participation in public school activities.
